Tesla’s newly unveiled Cybercab marks the electric vehicle company’s most direct move yet into fully autonomous ride-haling, like Uber or Lyft without a human driver.
The two-passenger vehicle, built without pedals or a steering wheel, is designed from the ground up for driverless operation. The move positions Tesla to compete with emerging robotaxi networks.
The Cybercab also debuts Tesla’s “unboxed” manufacturing process that the company said will eventually streamline the assembly process in a revolutionary way.
CEO Elon Musk said on X that production will begin slowly but eventually “end up being insanely fast” as the new system scales.
Typical automobile assembly takes hours for most popular domestic brands. Tesla has increasingly focused on streamlining production.
A rapid, low‑cost manufacturing process could be a significant competitive advantage as automakers face pressure to improve margins in a softening global EV market.
Tesla anticipates selling Cybercabs for $30,000 each, according to Musk. Cybercab owners will also have the option of hiring out their vehicles into Tesla’s robotaxi network.
The Cybercab could mean a potential new income stream for car buyers but current profit estimates are aspirational at best, making it a high-risk investment since the vehicle and network are so new.
Autonomous ride‑hailing companies such as Tesla and Waymo hope to reduce ride costs by removing human labor from the equation and deploying large fleets of self‑driving vehicles. The global autonomous vehicle market is projected to grow from roughly $274 billion in 2025 to $364 billion by 2035, according to Precedence Research, underscoring the industry’s long‑term growth potential.

Autonomous vehicles and driver-less ride-hailing may not seem impactful today, but the multi-billion dollar industry is poised to change transportation in a huge way in the next decade.
If the Cybercab achieves even a fraction of the market impact of Tesla’s Model Y — the world’s best‑selling vehicle in 2023 — it could become one of the defining vehicles of the next decade.
Autonomous Tesla taxi rides are already available in Austin, Texas through the company’s Robotaxi app, with Tesla saying additional markets will come online over time.
Musk’s Boring Co. is in the process of building Tesla tunnel networks in Las Vegas and Nashville.
