A man who was hit by a car while walking across State Road A1A survived, but police are looking for the public’s help to find his missing dog.
The Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety released video of the incident on the department’s Facebook page Friday evening, Jan. 23. The video includes images of the dog, Rocky, who ran from the scene.
The incident happened about 8:10 p.m. on Jan. 20 in front of Daytona Beach Shores City Hall in the 2900 block of A1A. Video shows the man walking Rocky on a leash into a crosswalk. As the man steps onto the median, he activates the crosswalk lights and then continues into the road. Then a vehicle hits him, sending him flipping over the top of the car.
Rocky flips multiple times before running off.
“During the incident, the victim became separated from his dog, Rocky, who ran from the area and has not yet been located,” according to the department. “Officers responded to the scene and provided on-scene medical care. The victim was transported by local emergency medical services and is expected to recover.”
The post did not go into detail about the wreck and the circumstances surrounding it.
The department described Rocky as an Australian cattle dog and heeler mix with a brindle coat. He was wearing a tan harness with a tan leash attached.
“(He is) very friendly but may be frightened, and was last seen running through the Chase Bank parking lot toward the Halifax River,” according to the department.
The department is asking anyone with information about Rocky’s whereabouts to contact the department’s non-emergency line at 386-248-1777.
