Car insurance costs in New York will rise at one of the fastest rates in the nation in 2026, according to new data.
New York drivers will see an average rate increase this year of 6%, the fourth-highest increase in the U.S., according to data from ValuePenguin, an online insurance comparison site that is part of Lending Tree.
The increase in insurance costs in New York defies the national trend. Rates are expected to decline this year in a majority of states, 32 in total.
The other locations with the biggest expected increases include New Jersey, Nevada, California and Washington, D.C. Rates in New Jersey are expected to climb more than 10.4%, the biggest increase in the nation, according to ValuePenguin.
Nationwide, rates will rise by just 0.67% this year.
That smaller national increase follows multiple years of double-digit hikes. Rates rose 11.6% in 2023, 17.1% in 2024 and 7.6% in 2025, according to ValuePenguin.
New York’s average increase in 2026, while one of the highest in the nation, is also smaller than recent years. Rates rose 17.1% in 2024 and 13.2% in 2025.
The average monthly premium in New York is projected to be $226 in 2026, about 9% higher than the national average. That ranks New York 13th among the 50 states and Washington, D.C.
Whether your personal premium rises or falls this year also depends on your insurance company.
ValuePenguin noted that five of the 10 biggest insurers in the nation are expected to lower car insurance rates in 2026. That list includes Progressive, Travelers, USAA, Liberty Mutual and State Farm.
Among big companies, Allstate is expected to have the largest increase in rates at 2%, according to ValuePenguin.
