Some Walmart customers in 19 states, including Alabama, will soon notice a change in their store’s parking lot.
The nation’s largest retailer is stepping up the installation of charging stations for electric vehicles. First announced in 2023, the plan includes building EV fast-charging stations at Walmart and Sam’s Club locations coast to coast by 2030.
“With a store or club located within 10 miles of approximately 90% of Americans, we are uniquely positioned to deliver a convenient charging option that will help make EV ownership possible whether people live in rural, suburban or urban areas,” Walmart said in its original announcement. “Our goal is to meet the needs of customers and members where they live and open the road to those driving across the country.”
On its website, Walmart lists 78 charging stations as “coming soon.” According to evchargingstations.com, the installation of 400-kW DC fast chargers will bring Walmart’s total to nearly 100 locations.
The list includes locations in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah and Washington.
In Alabama, the charging station will be at the Wetumpka Supercenter, Store No. 1101, located at 4538 U.S. 231.
Once complete, drivers will be able to start a charging session through the Walmart app by scanning a code at the site. The stations will offer CCS1, the type of charger used by most non-Tesla electric cars, and NACS, a slimmer plug design created by Tesla.
