CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) – Friday’s weather conditions led to a multi-car pile-up and multiple injuries.
In a Saturday press release, the Chocolay Township Police Department reports that Chocolay Township Police and Fire were called to a single-vehicle rollover at 1:32 p.m.
Police say traffic was backed up due to the rollover crash. Severe weather conditions in the area caused white-out conditions and poor visibility. Several vehicles approaching the rollover couldn’t see the backup and lost control of their cars, crashing into others.
A Chocolay Township Fire officer and tow truck driver ran to assist one of the drivers within the crash. While assisting the driver, the car they were at was hit by another. This caused the first car to hit the CTFD officer and the tow truck driver.
Chocolay Township Police, Michigan State Police, Marquette County Sheriff and Marquette City responded to the area. Several units shut down M-28 to prevent further injuries. Several patients were transported to UPHS Marquette and Munising Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Chocolay Township was assisted on scene by MI DNR Officers, Marquette Township Fire, Marquette Township EMS, Marquette City Fire, UPHS EMS, Alger County EMS, Marquette County Rescue 131, Porky’s Towing, Antilla’s Towing, Mickey’s Towing, Goodwins Towing, J and J Recycling and other agencies and citizens.
After the accident, Marq-Tran transported drivers and occupants to Chocolay Township, where Marquette County Emergency Management had set up a temporary Shelter. Marquette County Victim Services were called in to assist the parties involved.
Chocolay Township Police and Fire would like to remind drivers to slow down and give plenty of space to other drivers during winter driving.
