Traffic snarls are growing with delays now reaching almost as far back as the Kinsale Road Roundabout on the westbound side. Motorists should avoid the area if possible.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) confirmed that multiple vehicles were involved in the collision and that lane 2 has been closed as a result.
Emergency services are at the scene, and motorists have been advised to follow all traffic guidance by Gardaí and TII personnel.
A TII spokesperson said: "Some delays to your journey may occur. When approaching the collision location, drive with caution, reduce your speed, and please obey instructions from emergency services."
Traffic snarls have built up on the westbound side of the N40, and it's estimated that they will add an additional 10-15 minutes to the journey of any motorist passing through. The delays have been building steadily since the crash shortly before 3 p.m., so they may worsen further.
Traffic on the eastbound side is unaffected.
The crash is on the westbound side of the N40, approximately halfway between the Sarsfield Road Roundabout and the Bandon Road Roundabout.
