A police officer was seriously injured in a crash near Northam, north of Perth. (ABC News)
A police officer has been airlifted to hospital and an elderly woman has been left with serious injuries after two separate crashes involving police vehicles on Thursday.
Commander Mike Peters said a marked police car was involved in a collision with a semi-trailer on the Great Eastern Highway near Northam in the Central Wheatbelt just before 11am.
A second officer in the car is being treated for minor injuries, while the driver of the semi-trailer was not injured.

Around 20 minutes later at 11.15am, police were responding to reports of a person being armed with a gun when they were involved in a collision with another vehicle on Bagot Road in Subiaco. 
"They were driving under emergency conditions when they collided with an 80-year-old lady turning into a driveway," Commander Peters said. 
"As a result she has been taken to hospital with serious injuries."
The officers were not injured.

"It is always confronting for us when we see one of our own officers injured," Commander Peters said.
"The police go out every day to do their absolute best to protect the community and it is unfortunate that these events happen and our hearts and minds go out to all people affected by this."
Commander Peters said there was no further risk to the community as a result of the Subiaco incident, while a 23-year-old woman is assisting police with their inquiries.
He said it was a "stark reminder" to the community about the inherent dangers of policing.
