After a nearly 5-hour standoff, Raleigh police arrested a man believed to have rammed a pickup truck into a Raleigh police car over the weekend, and led officers on a chase on Wednesday.
Elmer Bautista Candela, 21, was arrested by Raleigh police on Wednesday. Police said he locked himself in a home on Bashford Road, prompting the road to be closed for hours.
A first court appearance is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Officers say they were called shortly before 2:30 p.m. to reports of an assault. In a news conference on Wednesday, Raleigh police Lieutenant David Davis said officers attempted to arrest Candela on Solar Drive.
Davis said once officers attempted to arrest him on Wednesday, he ran away and then stole a nearby pickup truck, starting a chase.
Police said the chase ended around Yonkers Road and Raleigh Boulevard when he crashed into another car. Officers said no one was injured during the crash, but the man ran away again.
WRAL’s Sky 5 flew over the scene while officers attempted to get Candela to come out of the home.
Police said no one was injured during the arrest, and Bashford Road has reopened.
Candela is facing additional charges related to the chase and car theft filed.
“The individual in connection to the investigation that is currently ongoing, has outstanding warrants for assault by strangulation, injury to personal property, and attempted larceny,” Davis said in a press conference on Wednesday.
Neighbors nearby told WRAL News they feel safer knowing Candela is now in custody.
“I hope he stays in jail for a long time,” said Louis Valez. “If he can do that to somebody that he doesn’t know, imagine what he could do to other people in the neighborhood.”
Candela is being held at the Wake County Detention Center until his Thursday afternoon court appearance.
