The Charlestown car park where Graham Norman is accused of stabbing Peter Caldwell to death. (ABC News: Bridget Murphy)
Graham Norman, 53, has been refused bail over the alleged stabbing murder of 83-year-old Peter Caldwell in Charlestown.
Mr Norman has been ordered to undergo a mental health assessment.
The case has been adjourned to October.
A man charged over a fatal stabbing in Newcastle will undergo a court-ordered mental health assessment after he was refused bail.
Graham John Norman, 53, is charged with murdering Peter Caldwell, 83, in a car park in the Newcastle suburb of Charlestown on Wednesday morning.
Mr Norman also stands accused of assault with intent to rob while being armed with an offensive weapon and causing grievous bodily harm.
Police charges tendered in the Newcastle Bail Division Court allege Mr Norman stabbed Mr Caldwell to death in a 20-minute period before fleeing the scene.
Neither man knew each other before what police have called a "random attack".
Mr Norman was arrested three hours later when he presented to Newcastle Police Station.
The Hamilton South man did not front court on Thursday and instead Newcastle Legal Aid solicitor Maer O'Donoghue appeared on his behalf.
She told Magistrate Elizabeth Bushby her client could be mentally unwell.
Magistrate Bushby asked if Mr Norman had a diagnosis.
Ms O'Donoghue replied "no your honour", before adding that it was the 53-year-old's first time in custody.
Magistrate Bushby endorsed the warrant before adjourning the matter to Newcastle Local Court on October 22.
There was a second stabbing in Newcastle on Wednesday, also in the Charlestown shopping precinct, just 200 metres away and ending with a man in hospital.
Police allege two teenagers, both aged 17, stabbed a 32-year-old man with a knife before running from the scene.
The man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for serious cuts to his arm before being taken to the John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.
The teenagers stand accused of wounding a person with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Both appeared in the Broadmeadow Childrens Court today where they were refused bail.
They are due back in court on October 20.
