PARMA, Ohio — City Council is expected to approve the Parma Service Department’s budgeted purchase of five new Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab pickup trucks.
Each vehicle is $36,713 ($183,565 total) and will be paid for out of the city’s capital improvements fund.
“Those are for our supervisors,” Parma Service Director Tony Vannello said. “The new vehicles are replacing all-wheel-drive Terrains, which are actually going to be repurposed to our senior center for delivery of senior meals.
“The all-wheel drive vehicle will give them a vehicle to drive safely in the wintertime, while our supervisors get new vehicles as well. So it’s a good fit for both departments.”
Donna Smallwood Activities Center Director Erin Lally is excited about the trucks.
“As these vehicles will also be used for safe transport to medical appointments and for grocery shopping, we’re pleased to be able to complement and upgrade our fleet,” she said.
Parma Mayor Tim DeGeeter noted the new vehicle purchases are through state pricing.
The service director said he keeps tabs on his entire fleet with the goal of updating its vehicles when needed.
It’s actually a banner year for Vannello with the city also purchasing six new plow trucks.
The $1.42 million expenditure from Parma company Valley Freightliner includes a half-dozen Freightliner 108SD trucks, which will be outfitted with a Henderson single axle Munibody snow and ice control equipment package, through state bid pricing.
Those trucks will be replacing two 1995 trucks and four 2003 trucks that have high mileage and need constant maintenance.
Overall, the mayor touted the new expenditures as a wise use of taxpayer funds.
“We’re getting a lot of new equipment,” DeGeeter said. “It just worked out where service will get new vehicles, which doesn’t happen often because we try to maintain beyond the lifespan of many vehicles.
“But at the same time, the senior center and our residents will benefit by being accommodated through additional home delivery of meals. They’ll have good vehicles that can get through the snow in these Northeast Ohio winters.”
