A family was sleeping upstairs when thieves broke in and stole the keys to their car this week.
The grey BMW X3 XDrive M Sport was then stolen from the driveway of the property in Richmond Road, Leyburn.
Police have issued an appeal after the so-called “2-in-1 burglary” happened between 1am and 1.24am on Wednesday.
The car’s owner Vee Clement-Jones said they and their children were sleeping upstairs at the time of the break-in.
“This was extremely distressing. The thieves broke into the back door to steal the car keys whilst we were all sleeping in bed.
“If anyone has any CCTV footage or knows anything please can you let PC Webb know at Leyburn police station.”
The car was fitted with a tracking device which was taken out of the vehicle in a lay-by near Middleham.
The personalised number plate and a child’s car seat were also dumped.
Police believe other properties may also have been scoped out by the suspects and are asking residents to check CCTV or doorbell footage, particularly if they live on Richmond Road, Thornborough Crescent or Woodburn Drive.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “We are appealing for information about any suspicious activity in the Leyburn area around this time.
“Please also make sure valuables and vehicle keys are secure and out of sight, and continue to report any suspicious behaviour.”
Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to email PC Dom Webb at dom.webb@northyorkshire.police.uk, call 101 quoting reference 12250156680, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
