A 21-year-old Raleigh man, arrested Wednesday night after a nearly 5-hour standoff, is linked to two criminal investigations, police said.
Elmer Bautista Candela locked himself in a home on Bashford Road in Raleigh Wednesday, prompting the road to be closed for hours. He was eventually taken into custody.
Police have linked him to an incident on Thistlebrook Court, when a pickup truck rammed into a Raleigh police car over the weekend. He is charged with assault and larceny in that case.
On Wednesday, Candela is accused of stealing a vehicle and leading officers on a chase before locking himself inside the Bashford Road home. He faces seven additional charges, including hit-and-run and driving without a license, linked to those events.
Candela is due in court at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Lieutenant David Davis said someone reported an assault shortly before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
When officers arrived and attempted to arrest Candela, he ran away and then stole a nearby pickup truck, starting a chase. That chase ended around Yonkers Road and Raleigh Boulevard when Candela crashed the stolen pickup into another car. From there, he was able to run and was eventually found in the home on Bashford Road.
“The individual in connection to the investigation that is currently ongoing, has outstanding warrants for assault by strangulation, injury to personal property, and attempted larceny,” Davis said in a press conference on Wednesday. 
Candela’s criminal record shows he was convicted of assault on a female in April for a crime that took place in February. He was serving probation for that crime when he was arrested again. Candela is being held at the Wake County Detention Center.
Neighbors nearby told WRAL News they feel safer knowing Candela is now in custody. 
“I hope he stays in jail for a long time,” said Louis Valez. “If he can do that to somebody that he doesn’t know, imagine what he could do to other people in the neighborhood.”
