Emergency services were called just after 12.10 pm on Saturday, August 23, to reports of an incident on the motorway just past Mooney Mooney Creek Bridge.
NSW Ambulance inspector Phillip Clark said they had multiple vehicles on the scene and assessed several people for injuries and transported three to Gosford Hospital.
The 67-year-old male bus driver was taken to the hospital in a serious condition with chest injuries, Mr Clark said.
A 20-year-old female bus passenger with a head laceration and the 69-year-old female driver of the car with minor back injuries were also driven to hospital, he said.
Mr Clark said while the bus was branded as belonging to St Paul’s Catholic College, Booragul, it was being used as a rail passenger bus due to trackwork on Saturday.
There were seven people on the bus, including the bus driver and the female with a head laceration, as well as three passengers with minor injuries and two who were uninjured.
Mr Clark said he believed the bus was driving up the hill from Mooney Mooney Creek Bridge when it struck the car from behind and then ran into a slow-moving truck.
The truck driver was uninjured, he said.
A NSW Police spokesperson said they were called to the scene at 11.55am and were still on the scene waiting for a tow truck just before 1.30pm.
The spokesperson said the bus driver and the driver of the car both returned negative roadside tests.
While emergency services were attending to the crash, a minor crash also occurred between two vehicles on the opposite side of the road. There were no injuries.
As of 1pm, the crash was causing significant delays, and one of the three southbound lanes was closed.
A helicopter was initially tasked to the scene but was stood down.
Transport for NSW was advising drivers between 12pm and 1pm to expect delays and use an alternative route if possible.
