A four-car Dalian train is now operating on the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said on Tuesday.
“Mas mabilis nang makasasakay ng tren ang mga pasahero matapos mag-deploy ng four-car Dalian train ang MRT-3 sa unang pagkakataon ngayong araw, August 26,” the DOTr said in a statement.
(Passengers will be able to board trains faster after the MRT-3 deployed a four-car Dalian train for the first time today, August 26.)
The four-car Dalian train was deployed after passing safety checks.
With the fourth car, the DOTr said passenger queues will be reduced as the capacity of each Dalian train set will be increased by 500.
Dalian train sets are operating during rush hours or from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
In his State of the Nation Address (SONA) last month, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said the administration is working on operationalizing the idle Dalian trains for MRT-3, which were purchased in 2014.
“Halos singkwentang dagdag na karwahe ang natengga nang sampung taon. Sayang ang pera. Sayang ang isang dekada. Pero ngayon, naayos na natin. Ang tatlong bagon ay nagagamit na ngayon. Asahan ninyo, ang ilan sa apatnapu’t lima ay magagamit na rin natin bago matapos ang taong ito; at ang iba ay sa susunod na taon naman,” Marcos said.
(Almost 50 additional carriages lay idle for 10 years. That was money and a decade wasted. But now we were able to fix them. Three trains are now operational. You can expect some of the remaining 45 carriages will be added before the year ends; and the rest will be running in 2026.)
In 2023, it was reported that the 48 sets of Dalian trains procured by the Philippine government to expand the operations of Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) remained unused due to unresolved incompatibility issues with the rail system. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA Integrated News
