CHICOPEE, MA. (WGGB/WSHM) – A car and school bus collided on Interstate 391 in Chicopee Tuesday morning.
Mass. State Police Trooper Leah O’Connell told Western Mass News that emergency crews were called to the northbound side of the highway, near mile-marker 2.6, around 7:30 a.m. after a car rear-ended a school bus.
When Western Mass News crews arrived on-scene Tuesday morning, several ambulances were seen along the highway, as well as a bus labeled Chicopee Public Schools along the side of the road. A couple tow trucks were also on-scene. Despite the bus having “Chicopee Public Schools” written on the side, the bus was actually being used by the Hampden Charter School of Science in Chicopee.
O’Connell added that two students were taken to an area hospital as a precaution. Chicopee Public School officials told Western Mass News that the students were from the Hampden Charter School of Science East and it was their second day of school for the year.
Driver safety is something that local police departments have been posting warnings about on social media. A traffic alert written by Chicopee Police asked drivers to “Slowdown in school zones and be prepared to stop for buses as they let kids on and off the bus. Our officers will be out monitoring bus stops and issuing citations to violators.” They are also encouraging drivers to plan their routes accordingly to avoid any delays.
We have reached out to Five Star Bus and the school for further details, but have not yet heard back.
