According to JD Power, AI features in new cars are making them more enjoyable for drivers, increasing owner satisfaction. At least, that’s the result of the 2025 US Tech Experience Index Study conducted by the firm.
The final R35 Nissan GT-R has rolled off the assembly line in Japan.
For the first time in the study’s ten year history, it has a smart vehicle category designed to gauge how car owners feel about artificial intelligence-driven features.
What JD Power found was some AI features in vehicles landed in the top ten for not only reliability but also overall satisfaction. Those include automatic climate control, smart ignition, blind spot cameras, and driver preferences.
While this result is amazing and invigorating many in the auto industry right now, we think they might be missing the boat. The features people seem to love AI doing in their vehicle are small, simple things which can be tedious.
But our fear is many will think this means people want AI to do even more. While some will surely welcome such intrusive features, we think many will grow to resent and hate them. But automakers right now are obsessed with being the first to offer all kinds of fancy gadgets without stopping to question if they should, if people want them, and if they’ll actually enhance the driving experience.
Plus, JD Power found in its study some of the AI-driven features in new cars are huge flops. Most notable among them was car wash mode, a feature which prepares your vehicle automatically to be washed.
Yes, that’s a thing on certain new vehicles.
But people were confused about how to use it and even where to find the mode as it’s buried several layers deep in the infotainment system menus.
But recognition and authentication features on cars are the most problematic for drivers, reveals the study. Those include biometric authentication for access and touchless controls, showing some AI features only add to drivers’ frustration.
