The closure, initially expected to last into the afternoon commute, ended about 3 p.m.
It wasn’t immediately clear what happened or if anyone was hurt. Footage shared by MassDOT showed thick smoke in the tunnel, with sparks at one point flying from the burning vehicle.
Traffic was seen heavily backed up in the city at about 2:40 p.m.
A car fire in the same stretch of highway last month closed it for hours. That blaze was caused by an electric car.
