An Escondido Police Department chase ended in a crash and an officer-involved shooting on Interstate 15 south in the Miramar area on Friday afternoon, officials said.
The chase began just after 4:30 p.m. and ended after the car leading the pursuit slammed into another vehicle near the interchange with state Route 163. A crashed white car and a black SUV were visible at the scene.

More than a half-dozen patrol cars and a motorcycle officer were on the scene at the end of the chase.
At least one person was hurt; an ambulance arrived quickly at the crash site, and paramedics loaded one person onto a stretcher and took them to the hospital.
EPD said none of its officers were injured.
It’s not yet known why police instigated the chase. What appeared to be two plainclothes officers wearing tactical vests were spotted on the roadside, talking with a pair of officers.

Police ended up chasing the suspects on foot after the crash; it’s not yet known if anybody was taken into custody.
SDPD did say, however, that police helicopter ABLE was assisting Escondido police with a pursuit on the freeway when the crash occurred.
During their investigation, officers closed I-15 south to traffic and diverted drivers to SR-163 south, causing congestion at the start of the holiday weekend.
The California Highway Patrol will be handling the investigation, according to Escondido police.
