Kirkland police and first responders are on the scene of a vehicle that has crashed through a Grocery Outlet’s front doors.
Kirkland Police confirm one person has been killed, and four more people were seriously injured after a car crashed into a grocery store in Kirkland.
Police said Sunday night that an elderly driver was one of four people who were injured in the crash.
Investigators said four people were inured and transported to the hospital on Sunday afternoon.  One person reportedly died during transport to the hospital, according to Kirkland Police.
The scene at Bridle Trails Grocery Outlet remained under active investigation Sunday evening.
The car was towed out of the store at around 6:00 pm.  It is pictured below.
"It’s tragic what happened here today in Kirkland, said Barbra Kuhfeld, a former employee at the store.
Kuhfeld’s son was working inside the store when the car crashed into the building.
"He called me about an hour ago and said, ‘A car has crashed through our store’," said Kuhfeld.  "I would not have been able to hold it together if something had happened to him."
She said she was relieved to learn he wasn’t injured.
"He said yes, people were seriously hurt, and I said, ‘How are you doing?’, and he said, ‘I’m in shock’," said Kuhfeld.  "I worked here before. I helped open the store from the ground up. It’s just hard."
Meantime, shoppers at neighboring businesses also knew something had happened at the store based on how people were reacting.
"My son and I were just here at ACE hardware, and we were walking into the store, and we saw people just scurrying along, and we were trying to figure out what in the world was going on," said Kennesha Buycks, who lives nearby.
Kennesha says she is a frequent shopper at that Grocery Outlet store.
"I’m so glad we decided not to hop over from ACE to Grocery Outlet today," said Buycks.
Those we talked to say something like this is atypical for the Kirkland community.
"We never have anything happen. It’s pretty quiet," said Buycks.
"Nothing ever bad really happens over here in Kirkland," said Kuhfeld. "I’m concerned for everybody because it’s a great store. It’s sad what happened here today in our community."
"My heart goes out to everybody who works at this store and the owners," she said.
