In 1995, Audi revealed its plans for a stylish and performance-focused future when it unveiled the TT concept that would go on to become the classic first-generation sports coupe. Eight years later, the Le Mans quattro concept paved the way for the brand-defining R8 supercar. Both of those beloved lines have since come to an end, but Audi's performance ambitions have not. This new vehicle, an electric sports car design study called the Concept C, is the brand's third declaration of intent.
The silhouette of the Concept C will look familiar to fans of the TT and the R8, but the similarities end there. Classic mid-engine proportions are paired here with dramatic styling cues that recall inter-war race cars like the Auto Union Type C/D. A narrow front grille design is framed by transparent surfaces with flush headlights, rounding behind two protruding front fenders. The look recalls all of modern EVs, Art Deco cars of old, and any number of late-1990s supercar concepts that never reached production.
A series of panels and louvers meet along the roof, including a rear window would be on a more conventional car. One of those panels is a removable roof, which makes the Concept C a hardtop roadster. The rounded rear end features two thin tail lights, which mirror the shape of the headlights at the car's nose.
Inside, single-piece bucket seats with well-defined bolsters sit behind a simple rounded dash. A relatively small central screen and circle-shaped steering wheel are refreshingly conventional in what is otherwise an ambitiously unusual electric sports car.
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner first hinted at the possibility of an electric Audi sports car back in March. In July, the executive laid out his ambitions for what would become the Concept C, suggesting that it was the brand's attempt to repeat another "TT moment." Although it is just a concept for now, the comparison to the R8 and TT suggests that this, too, will eventually turn into a product that could serve as a flagship for a new ethos at Audi.
Until a final production car arrives, the Concept C is just an idea. The good news for fans of Audi's sports cars is that this idea seems particularly plausible. A delayed electric sports car of a similar size from Porsche could provide some of the shared components necessary to justify production of a car based on the concept. That leaves a few unanswered questions, but a nearly production-ready design means that a car that looks like the Concept C could realistically be a part of Audi's future sooner rather than later.
