ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The Sandy Springs City Council approved an ordinance meant to protect citizens from predatory booting practices during a meeting on Tuesday.
The legislation doubles the size of booting warning signs to a minimum of 48 inches by 36 inches, and requires the booting company to have a publicly listed contract with the property owner.
“This is intended to prevent the service providers from trolling properties, or even just monitoring properties, to attach to unsuspecting vehicles,” the city’s agenda memo on the issue said.
A city attorney said officials have received several booting complaints and pointed to a class action lawsuit against Empire Parking Services, which was accused of illegally booting cars all around metro Atlanta. The company settled for $5 million in August.
“The balance of protection of the property owner, and adequate notice and warning to the vehicle owners, is the balance the ordinance should seek to achieve,” the memo said.
