HOLYOKE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – If you’re in the market for a new car, you have until the end of the month to save thousands of dollars on one type of vehicle.
“It’s almost a no-brainer to get an electric vehicle,” said Gary Rome with Gary Rome Hyundai.
The federal government is providing incentives for electric vehicle buyers as a part of the Clean Vehicle Tax Credit but, as a result of President Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill,’ the time to take advantage of the credit has gone from the end of 2032 to the end of September. “It’s almost like there’s a frenzy because people want to take advantage of these rebates before they’re over,” Rome added.
They are rebates, or discounts, worth thousands of dollars on both new and used electric vehicles. “The fed rebate and the state rebate on a used vehicle is $9,000,” Rome explained. “For new cars, like the one right behind me, the rebate is up to almost $20,000.”
It’s an effort from the state and federal government to cut down on emissions and give people who are hesitant to make the transition from gas to electric, some extra influence, and Rome claimed his dealership has certainly felt that influence. “The used ones are flying off the shelf. We sold, I think, 18 of them last month, so these used EVs, where you can get a $9,000 rebate between the fed and the state and buy a $44,000 car for $16,000, people from all over the state and Connecticut come in to buy these vehicles,” he said.
If you’re thinking of making the switch to an electric vehicle, you have until September 30 before these rebates end at dealerships across the state. “I don’t think we’ll see pricing like this again for quite some time,” Rome said.
