COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – Crews who were on the scene are sharing new details about a deadly Colleton County crash that happened earlier this week.
The Colleton County Fire-Rescue revealed that the person who died was a 15-year-old boy who was driving alone in a 2004 Honda Accord.
Troopers for the South Carolina Highway Patrol originally reported Tuesday’s accident, with Sgt. Tyler Tidwell saying it happened around 6 p.m.
Fire-Rescue officials say that crash happened on the 600 block of White Hall Road.
As he was driving south, the teen’s Honda dropped off the shoulder and the boy reportedly overcorrected. The car slid sideways and crossed into the northbound lane, where a Dodge truck was traveling.
The Dodge struck the Honda and both cars went off the northbound lane’s should and struck a big pine tree.
The Honda was heavily damaged and the teen driver, who crews say was unrestrained at the time of the crash, was trapped in the wreckage, suffering multiple traumatic injuries.
Witnesses tried to intervene before emergency services’ arrival, according to Colleton County Fire-Rescue crews, attempting to render aid.
The two adult men in the pickup truck suffered non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment at the scene before EMS took them to HCA Colleton Hospital in Walterboro.
Fire-Rescue crews determined, however, that the teen had died. They requested the Colleton County Coroner’s Office respond and make the official declaration.
Once workers for the coroner’s office and the highway patrol both completed their initial investigation, Colleton County Fire-Rescue crews were permitted to use rescue tools to remove the teen driver from the Honda.
White Hall Road was blocked for about three hours until the accident cleared.
This crash remains under investigation. The Colleton County Coroner has not yet released the name of the teenage victim.
