Emergency services were called to the Princes Highway, about one kilometre south of the Shellharbour Road exit, following reports a man was hit by a car about 11.10pm on Saturday, September 6.
“The man, believed to be in his 40s, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, he died at the scene,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.
“He is yet to be formally identified.”
One of two southbound lanes of the highway, near Shellharbour Junction train station, was closed as emergency services worked at the crash site.
Traffic was affected for four hours, with the lane reopened at 3.40am.
The driver of the car, a 46-year-old man, was uninjured and taken to the hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.
The crash came on the same day that an elderly man was left with serious injuries after he was hit by a car as he walked on a footpath in Dubbo.
In that accident, paramedics arrived to find an 87-year-old man lying on the roadway.
“Police were told a car crashed into another vehicle before continuing into a fence and colliding with a pedestrian who was standing on the footpath,” a NSW Police spokesman said.
The man suffered serious internal and hand injuries.
Paramedics also treated an 85-year-old woman for a head injury.
They were taken to hospital in a stable condition.
The 37-year-old car driver was charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm and negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm.

No charges have been laid in relation to the accident in Dunmore, and police are investigating the circumstances that led to the incident.
Officers have called on anyone with dashcam footage or information to contact Lake Illawarra Police on 4232 5599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
