MUNICH (dpa-AFX) – More affordable models, fewer design experiments, and familiar model names: Ahead of the IAA Mobility auto show, the Volkswagen Group is showcasing how it aims to break into the entry-level electric vehicle segment next year. Two days before the official start of the exhibition, the manufacturer presented four new electric models from VW, Skoda, and Cupra at its booth, all set to hit the market in the coming year. Among them is the ID. Polo, which is expected to launch at prices just below EUR25,000. Group CEO Oliver Blume spoke of “a clear focus on e-mobility” during the pre-show unveiling, according to the company’s statement.
Premiere Under Camouflage
The four new EV models are still partially camouflaged or displayed only as concept cars at the show. The true world premiere of the ID. Polo is scheduled for next May, with sales set to begin in autumn 2026. All four sibling models will be produced in Spain for cost reasons. In 2027, an even more affordable model, currently dubbed the ID. Every1, is slated to follow at around EUR20,000, as the successor to the VW Up city car discontinued in 2023. This model will be built in Portugal.
Electric Vehicle Sales on the Rise
With these new models in the lower price segment, VW aims to boost sales of its electric lineup. The group needs a high share of electric vehicles to meet the EU’s stricter CO2 fleet emission targets; otherwise, it faces hefty fines.
In the first half of the year, the group-wide share of EVs stood at 11 percent. Compared to the previous year, VW increased deliveries of battery-powered cars by 47 percent, and by nearly 90 percent in Europe. According to the company, the VW Group is the clear market leader for electric vehicles in Europe, with a 28 percent market share. Globally, the group sold nearly 466,000 EVs from January to July, out of a total of 4.41 million deliveries.
GTI with 226 Electric Horsepower
The newly revealed ID. Polo is the production version of the ID.2all concept shown two and a half years ago. Its length of 4.05 meters closely matches that of the combustion-engine Polo, and the design is more reminiscent of its gasoline counterpart than previous ID models. VW promises an electric range of up to 450 kilometers and 226 horsepower in the sporty GTI version. However, the entry-level version priced at EUR25,000 will feature a smaller battery with less range.
Names Instead of Numbers
With these new models, VW’s core brand is also moving away from the previous numbering system in its EV model names. Instead of ID.3, 4, or 5, future models will return to names familiar from their combustion-engine counterparts, starting with ID. Polo and ID. Cross, the electric version of the T-Cross. This means the cars will “finally have real names again,” said brand chief Thomas Schäfer./fjo/DP/zb
