Dealerships have been advised to reprogram the BCM with improved software to resolve a fuel-related issue
If you’re like me, you enjoy delaying fueling up as long as possible and watching the estimated driving range dip dangerously low, knowing that there is, in fact, plenty of fuel left to get you to the next gas station. However, if you own a Mazda CX-70 or a CX-90 in the US, you’d be wise not to do this, as an issue means the cluster may show there’s fuel remaining, even if the tank is empty.

The issue has prompted Mazda to recall 104,854 CX-70 and CX-90 vehicles. The automaker explains that fuel containing ethanol can interact with materials on the sending unit circuit board in the sub-tank. Over time, this reaction produces a soot buildup that interferes with the fuel gauge, making it display inaccurate readings.
Scale of the recall
The CX-90 is the most widely impacted model. In total, 88,798 CX-90s from the 2024 and 2025 model years built between December 27, 2022, and April 25, 2025, have been recalled. In addition, Mazda is recalling a total of 16,056 2025 CX-70s manufactured from December 5, 2023, to April 25, 2025.
Mazda says it received its first field report about a potential problem in August 2023 after one of its vehicles stalled, despite the fuel gauge indicating that fuel remained in the tank. That triggered a lengthy investigation across Canada and the US, stretching over 18 months.
The findings led to Mazda’s decision to issue a recall in late August this year. While every one of the recalled CX-70s and CX-90s could potentially be affected, the company says it has not received any reports of crashes or injuries tied to the fault.
Beginning November 1, owners will be notified of the recall. Dealers have been instructed to reprogram the body control module with updated software at no cost, which Mazda says will correct the inaccurate fuel readings.
