The CEO of a cardboard packaging company based in Cullman is auctioning off hundreds of classic cars this month, after spending years overpaying Alabama residents for their cars.
Greg Rusk, who runs Rusken Packaging in Cullman, has spent years collecting classic cars. His 1,300-car collection, called “The Generous Collection,” will now be auctioned off, largely with no reserve.
Rusk started collecting classic cars nearly 30 years ago, according to the Autopian magazine. At first, he was just trying to collect a Cadillac from every year the company has been in business.
“I would go through spells,” Rusk told Tom Cotter, who hosts the classic car show Barn Find Hunter. “I started out Cadillacs, and then I would go to Chevelles, and then I’d switch to Trans Ams.”
Eventually, he branched out to other cars. Today, the exact number of cars Rusk owns is unclear, but it’s estimated to be between 800 and 1,300.
As word spread about Rusk’s collection obsession, people began reaching out to him about selling their car. Often, they were selling their classic car in order to pay for an unexpected expense, like a medical bill.
Instead of haggling, Rusk would ask how much the seller wanted and pay that, according to Autopian. Hence, the name of his collection.
Around half of Rusk’s collection comes from Alabama, he said.
The Generous Collection is quite varied. Rusk didn’t have any criteria when buying the cars, other than whether or not he thought the car was cool. There are all different makes and models, some in pristine condition, and others that need serious help.
“I was always after unique, more than anything,” Rusk told Cotter.
Rusk told Cotter that he is done collecting cars. After spending nearly 30 years collecting, he’s ready for the cars to go to other people.
Rusk’s full collection will be auctioned on Hagerty, an online marketplace for classic cars.
