A Staten Island mother and her 20-year-old son — who were allegedly involved in a New Jersey street racing accident that left one person dead — were caught last week while trying to flee the scene, police said.
The New York Post writes that Alvi Limani and his mother, Vilma Vneshta, 42, could not escape the law even though they went all the way to Miami to avoid a charge of aggravated negligent homicide against the 20-year-old, who, according to prosecutors, completely destroyed his BMW X3 on the Garden State Parkway on June 29.
Limani and another driver at the wheel of a BMW M5 were making dangerous maneuvers at high speed southbound when Limani’s vehicle struck two other vehicles and rolled over several times around 19 p.m., the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office said.
Two passengers with him were thrown from the SUV, including Albion Hysenaj, 20, of Staten Island, who was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and died, officials said.
Limani and another passenger, Emily Harrington, 19, of Staten Island, fled on foot, prosecutors said.
Limani and Vneshta allegedly fled to Miami with the intention of leaving the US, but were caught by law enforcement near Miami on July 17, the prosecutor’s office said.
It is not clear exactly where they were arrested.
The mother and son were held in Florida for three weeks before being extradited last Wednesday to New Jersey, with footage posted on TikTok purporting to show the couple being taken off a plane in handcuffs and leg chains at an airport in the tri-state area.
Photos from the recording show Limani wearing a neck brace and a black eye, while Vneshta, with her hair tied back in a ponytail, looks at the camera with a neutral expression.
Both are in custody at the Middlesex County Correctional Center awaiting detention evaluation hearings, New Jersey State Police said Monday.
Limani faces charges of first-degree gross negligence manslaughter, second-degree vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, causing death while driving with a suspended license and other charges related to the accident and attempted escape, prosecutors said.
Vneshta faced charges of third-degree obstruction.
The other driver involved in the race, Jeter Ogando, 23, of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, was also charged with vehicular homicide and other related charges, while Harrington faced charges of third-degree obstruction, obstruction and conspiracy to endanger another person, prosecutors said.
