The facelifted crossover arrives later this year with a more expressive design and an updated cabin
Consumers have been dodging the Alfa Romeo Tonale like a hornet, and sales are down 23% in the United States. To help reverse that trend, the company has introduced a facelifted crossover.
Looking far more expressive, the updated model wears a new front fascia with a concave scudetto grille inspired by the 33 Stradale. It incorporates horizontal lines as well as a blacked out frame.

Elsewhere, there’s a more aggressive bumper and a shorter front overhang. Alfa Romeo also added wider front and rear tracks as well as restyled wheels and updated badging. Buyers will also find three new colors – Rosso Brera, Verde Monza and Giallo Ocra – as well as an available contrasting black roof.
Small Interior Updates
The interior appears to largely carryover, but Alfa Romeo mentioned “elevated materials, colors, and finishes.” Among the changes are new contrast stitching on the dashboard, door panels, and armrest. Customers can also get a red leather interior for the first time.
Alfa Romeo’s European PR team also mentioned a redesigned center console and a new rotary shifter. These will presumably make their way to the US-spec crossover as well.
Plug-In Hybrid Appears Dead In America
In the United States, the Tonale will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine developing 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. It’s connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission and a standard all-wheel drive system.
Interestingly, Alfa Romeo has apparently dropped the plug-in hybrid powertrain in America. It enabled the model to produce a combined output of 285 hp (213 kW / 289 PS) and travel 33 miles (53 km) on electricity alone.
A Revamped Lineup
Besides streamlining powertrain options, Alfa Romeo has cut the number of trims to three. The entry-level Tonale Sprint has LED lighting units, gloss black accents, and 18-inch wheels. They’re joined by aluminum pedals and fabric seats with contrast stitching and a Biscione logo on the seat backs.
The mid-level Veloce is more luxurious as it sports a dual mode suspension and larger 19-inch wheels that are backed up by red Brembo brake calipers. Buyers will also find a hands-free power liftgate and perforated leather seats with ventilation.
Lastly, there’s a new Sport Speciale edition. It features a unique exterior with silver accents and three-hole 20-inch wheels, which cover gloss black Brembo brake calipers. Buyers will also find an exclusive interior with black-and-pearl perforated Alcantara seats and a black Alcantara-wrapped dashboard.
The 2026 Alfa Romeo Tonale will arrive at U.S. dealerships late this year and additional details will be announced closer to launch.
Updated Engines In Europe
The European model closely echoes its American counterpart, but there are far more powertrain options, which have been “updated to the Euro 6E-bis standard.”
Choices include a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid with 173 hp (129 kW / 175 PS), which is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and front-wheel drive. Customers can also get a 128 hp (96 kW / 130 PS) 1.6-liter diesel, which comes with a six-speed DCT and front-wheel drive.
The plug-in hybrid lives on in Europe and will be offered with outputs of 187 hp (140 kW / 190 PS) and 266 hp (199 kW / 270 PS).
