FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The California Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly multi-vehicle crash on southbound Highway 99.
Officers responded on Sunday at 9:15 a.m. to the portion of the highway between North and Cedar avenues.
Mike Salas with CHP says a 62-year-old man is dead and multiple others, including children, are injured.
People sustained minor to major injuries and were taken to local hospitals.
Salas says there was only 10 to 15 feet of visibility on the road at the time of the pile-up.
A total of 17 vehicles, including one big rig truck, were involved in the crash.
Initial reports indicate that two vehicles slowed down, while several vehicles behind them were traveling faster, leading to crashes.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including medical personnel and fire crews.
A Fresno FAX bus also helped transport people who sustained minor injuries.
Salas is urging drivers to take an alternate route and reminds everyone to be cautious on the road.
The area of the highway impacted is expected to be closed well into the afternoon as the investigation continues.
