Looking at the Audi line-up today is a bit depressing. It consists entirely of sedans and SUVs. Some of them are neat, such as the E-Tron GT, and, of course, there’s the extremely cool and fast RS6 wagon, but there aren’t any beautiful sports coupes anymore. The Audi TT died in 2023, and the R8 followed a year later. Thankfully, it seems some kind of sports car is just around the corner, based on a teaser Audi just released, which you can see below.
The teaser focuses on landmark cars from Audi’s history, all of which are focused on performance in some way. It leads off with plenty of loving looks at the first-generation TT, followed by vintage footage of Auto Union’s Pre-War streamliner racers. At the end, we get a look at the Audi Avus Quattro concept, which itself took significant inspiration from those streamlined cars with its bare aluminum panels and aerodynamic shape. The video also has somewhat generic, fluffy statements about the past, the future, and Audi doing impressive things. Here’s an example: “The legends of yesterday, are the blueprint of tomorrow.”
While the video itself says nothing specific about an upcoming model, the timing has us suspicious. The IAA Mobility show, effectively the Munich Motor Show at this point, starts on September 9, barely more than a week away. With it that close, it sure seems like this video could be hinting toward something.
That’s not all we have to go off of, though. Audi’s CEO has spoken multiple times about needing a sports car. He spoke somewhat broadly about the idea back in January. Then, in July, he said that the company will have a new sports car, and show it right around time of this year’s IAA show. The initial car will be more of a concept, but it will get a production version. He described the impending reveal as a “TT Moment 2.0.” Additionally, he said this first sports car would be a car positioned somewhere in-between the TT and R8, and it would be electric.
That brings us to one other important piece of evidence: a Porsche prototype. In April, we received photos of what looked like a Porsche 718 Boxster EV prototype. However, our spy photographer said that it was actually an Audi prototype, which was confirmed by the license plate number. It suggested that Audi is working on a sports car with performance and size similar to the Porsche 718, probably even a lot of the hardware. That would also be a car that would fit comfortably between the Audi TT, which was sort of a sleek VW Golf R, and the Audi R8, which literally was the basis for Lamborghinis.
When you add all this up, it seems quite clear that Audi’s Instagram video is the start of a teaser campaign that will show us the return of Audi sports cars. We can’t wait to see the full car.
