The official numbers are tallied, in 2024 the state of New York’s Department of Motor Vehicles helped recover 303 stolen vehicles. Their total value: $8,353,334.
According to AutoInsurance.com, car theft rates shot up 28% between 2019 and 2023. It was a perfect storm. First, thieves discovered and shared vulnerabilities that made several common makes and models easier to steal. In addition, many forms of crime increased during the COVIUD quarantine.
New York didn’t flinch, the state cracked down on criminals reselling stolen cars. Governor Hochul said more. “New Yorkers who buy a car or who have one repaired, need to know that New York will stand up for them and protect them..If issues cannot be resolved, swift enforcement action is taken.”
The New York DMV also stepped up to help consumers recoup another $3 million. This was in vehicle titles, service, and refunds they were owed by crooked shops or dealerships. For example, the state stood up for 474 New Yorkers who paid for repairs that were never completed.
State Senator Rachel May pointed out why recovering lost vehicles has such a big impact on hardworking citizens. “For many New Yorkers, a vehicle is a lifeline that helps with daily activities like commuting to work, getting kids to school or practice, and managing errands like grocery shopping. When someone’s vehicle is stolen, it disrupts their entire routine, making even the simplest tasks a challenge.”
