BMW has issued a recall for drivers of nearly 200,000 cars, advising them to park outside due to a risk of fire.
The recall applies to BMW cars with model years between 2019 and 2022. The affected vehicles can catch on fire while in park or drive due to possible corrosion of the engine starter relay, which can lead it to overheat or short circuit, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a Sept. 26 release.
In addition to 200,000 BMWs, the recall also applies to more than 1,000 2020-2022 Toyota Supras, which are manufactured by BMW.
“Owners should park outside and away from buildings and other vehicles until they either confirm their vehicle is not subject to the recall or have their vehicle remedied,” the NHTSA release states.
BMW will address the issue with a phased recall due to the availability of parts.
Initial notification letters are set to be mailed to owners on Nov. 14, and a follow-up notice will be sent when the parts needed to fix the vehicle are available.
