MUNICH — BMW plans to launch 40 new or updated models based on its Neue Klasse technology platform by 2027, CEO Oliver Zipse said, as the automaker debuted its first car on the platform, the iX3 midsize full-electric SUV.
The i3 electric sedan will be the next model to launch after the iX3, Zipse said at the IAA Mobility auto show here on Sept. 8.
The Neue Klasse represents “a massive leap that will shape the entire brand for years to come,” Zipse said.

Neue Klasse-based models will have the automaker’s new electronics and software architecture that offers a longer range, faster charging and more software features.
BMW says iX3 is its first software-defined vehicle because it has four “superbrains” with 20 times more computing power than the current iX3. These high-performance computers pool their processing power for driving dynamics, automated driving, infotainment, and comfort-enhancing functions.
The iX3 has a range of up to 800 km (497 miles) in the WLTP cycle. Its battery can be charged 30 percent faster than current BMW electric models to enable more than 370 km worth of driving range within 10 minutes.
BMW will start iX3 production at its new factory in Debrecen, Hungary, this autumn. The European market rollout will start in spring 2026; the U.S. and Canadian launches are in summer 2026.
The i3 sedan will go into production at BMW’s home plant in Munich in November 2026. The i3 will be the first model variant of the new 3 Series generation, BMW said.
