MILWAUKEE — Body camera footage shows the dramatic rescue of an FBI agent whose SUV was left hanging over the edge of the I-794 overpass in downtown Milwaukee Monday morning during rush hour traffic.
A Milwaukee County Sheriff’s deputy smashed the back window of the agent’s SUV so she could safely crawl out after a frightening crash left her passenger side wheels dangling over a retaining wall 30 feet above the ground.
“I’m glad it didn’t go any further,” the deputy said in the body camera video.

The crash occurred when the driver of another car swerved into the FBI agent’s lane while trying to avoid rear-ending a vehicle that had suddenly braked in front of him.
“They were starting to lock. I turned into this lane because I thought I’m going to hit them and I didn’t see, but I thought there’s a chance no one’s here, and it was a guarantee I was going to rear-end someone pretty hard, so I turned into this lane,” the driver told deputies.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office cited the driver for unsafe lane deviation.
First responders expressed concern about snow buildup from plowing crews creating a ramp along the retaining wall, which may have contributed to how far the SUV traveled over the edge.
“This snow makes it dangerous,” a firefighter said in the footage.
“Yeah, I know, they turn into ramps,” a deputy responded.
The Milwaukee County Department of Transportation is responsible for plowing the overpass.
“There is no evidence to suggest that snow accumulation, either on the roadway or parapet walls, contributed to the accident,” a Milwaukee County DOT spokesperson said.
The FBI agent declined medical attention at the scene. The other driver was also not injured.
