Brad Sweet has made more news in this extraordinarily active Sprint Car silly season — and this time, it’s his most significant announcement yet.
After a decorated career accentuated with six straight 410 national titles from 2019-24 and his 2018 Knoxville Nationals victory, the 39-year-old Sweet is retiring as a full-time driver, the Grass Valley, Calif., veteran announced during Sunday’s Kubota High Limit Racing awards banquet.
Entering his 40s this December and being open about his performance struggles this year as Rico Abreu ended his six-time title national title reign on High Limit Racing, Sweet figured now is the time to hang up his helmet as a full-time driver.
While the news is quite seismic to the competition pool across open-wheel racing considering the sport won’t have a future National Sprint Car Hall of Famer race regularly anymore while Kasey Kahne Racing searches for a new driver, it’s not all that surprising, as Sweet has expanded his off-track involvement over the last few seasons.
Since 2021, the 106-time nationally touring victor – 92 on the World of Outlaws; 14 on High Limit — he’s taken over promotorship reins of California’s Silver Dollar Speedway, co-created High Limit Racing with brother-in-law Kyle Larson and most recently last month acquired the Northern Auto Racing Club — the West Coast’s premier Sprint Car sanctioning body — in partnership with car owner and Skagit Speedway owner Kevin Rudeen.
It’s worth noting that Sweet hasn’t explicitly ruled out racing altogether, perhaps leaving the door open to racing select events and Sprint Car’s biggest events on the calendar.
Kahne, meanwhile, has not announced Sweet’s full-time replacement for the 2026 season in which his team secured the second of 10 franchises on the High Limit tour following their title 2024 season and third-place finish in the owners’ standings this year.
This story will be updated with Sweet’s full message from Sunday’s High Limit banquet.
