Tempe Police Department and Fire Medical Rescue responded to a car accident at the intersection of University Drive and Rural Road shortly after midnight Sunday morning. Three individuals were transported to the hospital, one of whom has died, according to a statement from a Tempe Police Department spokesperson.
The accident involved three cars and occurred after one driver failed to stop at a red light, the Tempe spokesperson said. The driver hit another vehicle that had a green arrow, which resulted in a third car being hit, and collided into Einstein Bros. Bagels on Rural Road.
Out of the three individuals who were taken to the hospital, one had life-threatening injuries, the spokesperson said. At 7:44 a.m., the spokesperson said in a follow-up statement one of the individuals who was sent to the hospital had died. Tempe PD was informed no ASU students were involved, said the spokesperson in another follow-up statement.
The driver who caused the accident was arrested for driving under the influence, the spokesperson said.
