A BUSY car park has closed ahead of an ambitious £575 million project that councillors hope will create safer streets and future homes.
Southend’s Essex Street car park has closed today and is set to serve as a base for developer Taylor Woodrow throughout the scheme.
The council has previously acknowledged the potential inconvenience of the closure and has advised residents on the nearest alternative car parks.

The large-scale improvement project includes reducing the size of the current roundabout, removing the underpass and footbridge, and introducing new cycle paths and better pedestrian access routes into Southend’s centre.
The changes are expected to enhance safety and connectivity for both residents and visitors.
According to a Southend Council statement, the nearest alternative parking can be found at Short Street car park, Tylers Avenue and York Road car park, University Square car park, Warrior Square car park, Chancellor Road car park, Clarence Road car park, Alexandra Street car park, Victoria Shopping Centre car park.
The project is supported by a £15 million housing infrastructure grant from Homes England.
