A car fire has closed a busy waste and recycling centre in Millbrook today.
Firefighters rushed to City Depot Household Waste and Recycling Centre on First Avenue in Millbrook after a car erupted in flames today.
Pictures captured by eyewitnesses show crews from Hampshire Fire and Rescue rush to dampen the flames using hose jet reels and the council has confirmed that the centre is currently closed.
One eyewitness told the Echo: “Yes a car pulled into the dump and then it began smoking.
“The person driving was dragged out. The car then went up in flames.
“Fire men arrived and it was sprayed with water.
“The whole area was filled of toxic smoke as it’s come from a car – it looked almost as if the car was stopping to burn and then a big flame came from the bottom of the car and it began smoking again.”

Nobody was injured during the incident and all staff were safely moved away from the vehicle fire while firefights worked to extinguish the flames.
The council has also explained that the car belonged to a member of public who was using the Waste and Recycling Centre facility.
Southampton City Council have also said they will update residents when the facility is in a position to reopen.
A spokesperson for Southampton City Council said: “City Depot Household Waste and Recycling Centre temporarily closed.
“The City Depot Household Waste & Recycling Centre is currently closed following a vehicle fire earlier today.
“The fire involved a member of the public’s car, and nobody was hurt.
“Fire crews remain on site, and the centre will stay closed while safety checks are completed. This may mean the site remains closed for the rest of the day.
“If you had a booking earlier today: you’ll be able to visit once the site reopens using your original booking — there’s no need to rebook.”
