A car flipped upside down on the A19, sparking severe delays and a lane closure during this morning’s rush hour.
The crash, which happened just after 8.10am today (Thursday, November 20), saw the grey vehicle turned on its roof in the middle of the right-hand lane heading northbound near Murton interchange.
The left-hand lane remained open while police shut the right-hand lane for about an hour to recover the vehicle.
Traffic built up along the road while the lane was closed.
AA maps showed ‘severe’ delays of about 18 minutes along the A-road between the B1320 at Peterlee roundabout and the A1018 at Seaton Interchange through the snowy rush hour.

A picture from the scene shows the upside-down car blocking the road, while National Highways controlled traffic in the area.
The nearby road appeared covered in a layer of white, after snow fell overnight across the region and temperatures plummeted to freezing.

Durham police confirmed the driver was not believed to be injured in the incident.
A spokesperson said: “Police were called just after 8.10am today following a one-vehicle collision in which a car overturned on the A19 near Murton.
“Thankfully, the driver was not believed to be injured and the car will be recovered.”
The North East Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to the scene at at 8.23am and dispatched one ambulance crew to the incident but were stood down by the police.
