Motorists were urged to avoid the area after the rush-hour crash
Part of a motorway was closed during rush hour after an electric car hit the central reservation and caught fire, police said.
Firefighters from Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City were called to the A1(M) just after 07:00 BST.
Hertfordshire Police said the northbound carriageway remained closed between junctions four and five after the single-vehicle collision involving a white Tesla.
East of England Ambulance Service confirmed an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene and the driver was taken to hospital.
The motorway was initially closed in both directions, causing several miles of tailbacks.
