Last month, 45,500 new electric cars were registered on German roads. This means that almost one in five new cars in September was an electric car, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority.

The number of newly registered electric cars was therefore almost 32 percent higher than in the same month last year. In August 2025, just under 39,400 electric cars were registered, also accounting for 19 percent of the total.
However, US car manufacturer Tesla also recorded a decline in September – and Elon Musk's company's results were even better than in previous months. Compared to the same month last year, 9.4 percent fewer vehicles from the e-car manufacturer were newly registered in Germany. In a comparison of August 2025 to August 2024, the drop was still almost 40 percent.
The fact that significantly more e-cars were registered overall is also due to the extremely low level of the previous year. Due to the loss of subsidies, sales of electric cars collapsed in 2024. The market has recovered again this year.
"The current pleasing growth rates in the electric segment should not obscure the fact that sales levels are well below the original forecasts," says Constantin Gall from consultancy firm EY. We cannot speak of a real ramp-up of electromobility.
In total, around 235,500 new cars were registered in Germany in September – an increase of 12.8 percent compared to the same month last year. However, a broader view shows that the car market is stagnating: since the beginning of the year, 0.3 percent fewer new cars have been registered than in the same period last year.
"The increase in September is not the start of a trend reversal," says Gall. "The economic situation in Germany remains bleak, massive structural problems are becoming increasingly apparent in Germany as a business location and the mood among companies and consumers is poor." He estimates that new car sales for the year as a whole will be roughly on a par with the previous year – and thus more than 20 percent below the 2019 figure.
As usual, most vehicles were registered by companies (just under 66%). SUVs accounted for 33.6 percent of all new registrations. They therefore remain the most important segment on the German car market.
