ELIZABETH, New Jersey (WABC) — A student and driver were injured when a vehicle crashed into a high school in Elizabeth on Monday morning.
It happened at at the John E. Dwyer Technology Academy at Bridge and Pearl streets just after 8 a.m.
Elizabeth police say they first spotted the silver car driving erratically on Bridge Street, running a red light at Pearl Street, driving over the curb and sidewalk, before hitting an exterior wall of the Dwyer auditorium.
A student in the auditorium suffered a minor leg injury.
Students in class say they learned about what happened through social media.
"Everyone is in shock because they didn't think that would happen. First day back to school after a week, it's a lot," said student Brian Willis.
School officials say while the auditorium sustained significant damage, structural engineers have determined the building is structurally sound and daily activities can continue as scheduled.
Students say they weren't informed of the crash, or that a student was injured — they were only told to avoid the auditorium.
"I didn't really know how big the hole was, we were inside, we didn't know what happened, they wouldn't tell us anything," student Djun Howard said.
Officials say the driver suffered what appeared to be minor injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
