ONE of America’s most gridlocked cities is about to have its roads even more constrained thanks to a major corridor’s closure.
In celebration of the coming Christmas holiday, a massive stretch of a New York City thoroughfare will be shut down to all vehicles.

New York City’s Holiday Open Street program is set to return for the fourth year in a row, organized by the Fifth Avenue Association (FAA).
Like in 2024, it’ll be for one Sunday only. The inaugural 2022 and second 2023 event which ran for three Sundays in a row, but the city attributed this to giving a boon to local businesses recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic.
This year, the event is taking place on December 14 from 12 to 6 pm. During this time, Fifth Avenue will be shut down to traffic from 47th Street to 57th Street.
This is a notably larger stretch than last year’s event, which only occupied Fifth Avenue between 48th and 55th Streets.

Fifth Avenue is one of the most famed shopping districts in the world, and is specifically regarded for its emphatic display of holiday cheer during the Christmas season.
Also in the vicinity is the famed Rockefeller Christmas tree, which will be lit on December 3 and can be found at Rockefeller Center between 48th and 51st Streets, and Fifth and Sixth Avenues.
“Working with the City of New York and New York City [Department of Transportation], we look forward to welcoming everyone back to the most famous holiday shopping street in the world,” said President of the FAA Edward Pincar Jr. in a statement.
While Pincar didn’t specifically say why the one-day schedule was being stuck with this year, the FAA attributed last year’s schedule shift to the logistical challenges surrounding increases security around Trump Tower.

The 2024 change in schedule earned the FAA some criticism from local leaders like Manhattan Councilman Keith Powers, who was of the belief that a larger pedestrian event was “such an easy win for the area in Midtown” that should return.
While there’s no word on if the extended schedule will return next year, the city is currently exploring a redesign of Fifth Avenue between Bryant and Central Parks to the tune of over $400 million.
The redesign would seek to reduce traffic lanes and expand sidewalks, further transforming Fifth Avenue into a pedestrian’s holiday shopping paradise.
