CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office has a new traffic unit patrolling the streets and you’ve probably already seen them.
Their bright orange color makes them hard to miss… it’s the Road Runners.
The Road Runners are meant to stand out. Their bright orange color grabs drivers’ attention and hopefully encourages them to slow down.
But it’s not just the Road Runners that are new. There’s also the Strike unit, which stands for Strategic Traffic Road and Addiction Canine Enforcement.
The Road Runners focus on enforcing municipal and unincorporated streets within the county, and the Strike unit focuses on highways and parkways.
Sheriff Richard Coleman says speeding is a county-wide issue that the Road Runners specifically were designed to address.
“We do have a great deal of citizens who actually don’t speed, but we have to address those that do because that is a traffic safety concern. And so, with that being said, we formulated a traffic unit from the concerns of concerned citizens.”
Sheriff Coleman says the Road Runners have been hitting the streets for a couple months now and there have already been improvement on the roadways.
Both the Road Runners and Strikes have also responded to crimes and emergencies.
