After the Chevrolet SS, which was used from 2013 to 2017, the Chevrolet Camaro became the model on which NASCAR The Cup Series of the bow-tie brand based their stylistic codes. With the legendary model’s disappearance from the catalog at the end of last year, the Camaro ZL1 simply displays the word “Chevrolet” on its rear bumper.
This situation could continue into 2026, but it will in any case be done with a new body, representing Chevrolet’s new codes, as explained by Elton Sawyer, vice president of competition for NASCAR. Invited on the championship’s official radio channel this Tuesday, Sawyer explained that several steps are necessary before validating the use of a new body in the championship, and that Chevrolet had ticked all the boxes.
“We started working with the folks at General Motors about a year ago… and then they started submitting the body parts, which then went through wind tunnel testing with all the OEMs, our original equipment manufacturers, watching the testing. So all the boxes were checked, and we’re looking forward to seeing the new Chevrolet when we get to Daytona in 2026.”
Fans and observers should have an even shorter wait than the first practice sessions of the Daytona 500, since the new Chevrolets are expected to take to the track in the non-championship round of the Clash on the Bowman Gray oval, a race to be held on February 1st. On a common basis, the three manufacturers (Chevrolet, Toyota and Ford) are allowed to make cosmetic changes to bring the track cars closer to the stylistic identity of the road models.
However, it is impossible not to see in these changes Chevrolet’s desire to regain a competitive advantage over Ford and Toyota in terms of pure pace, both manufacturers having already updated the bodies of their seventh-generation cars in recent years, which did not come into effect until 2022.
