Witnesses say crash was result of drag racing
CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago police are investigating a deadly crash Wednesday on the city's South Side.
Witnesses told ABC7 the crash was the result of drag racing.
The crash happened at about 10:40 a.m. in the 9200-block of S. Stony Island Avenue, Chicago police said.
A black Cadillac was heading southbound on Stony Island Avenue when it crashed into a blue Mini Cooper at the intersection, police said.
The driver of the Mini Cooper, a 50-year-old man, then struck a business after the crash, police said.
The 50-year-old was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital where he died, police said.
The driver of the Cadillac, a 47-year-old man, was taken to an area hospital and is expected to be okay.
No other injuries were reported.
Two witnesses told ABC7 the driver who was killed was the innocent victim of two other drivers drag racing at speeds approaching 100 miles an hour.
"It looked like somebody stepping on a pop can," witness Brittny Watson said. "You just heard glass, explosion."
"The way he was driving, I thought he was going to flip himself," witness Tonya Whiteside said. "I thought he was going to end up hitting a tree or something, but that's not what happened."
Those witnesses say they called 911 and gave their account to investigators. At this time, CPD won't confirm the crash was the result of drag racing and say they continue to investigate.
