A woman died after CHP says she was lying on the roadway when she was struck by a car on North Rancho Drive, south of Arvin, early Monday morning.
The California Highway Patrol said on Monday, January 26, 2026, at around 4:52 a.m., officers were called to the area of N. Rancho Drive and Rancho Road, for a report of a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

CHP said a preliminary investigation found that a 23-year-old man was driving a 2010 Honda Civic southbound on N. Rancho Drive, south of Rancho Road. For reasons still under investigation, a 21-year-old woman was lying on the roadway of N. Rancho Drive.
According to CHP, the driver of the Honda was unable to take evasive action and struck the woman, causing severe injuries.
Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and pronounced the woman dead.
CHP said the driver of the Honda remained on scene and was cooperative with investigators.
N. Rancho Drive was closed for about two and a half hours between David Road and Rancho Road for the completion of the crash investigation.
CHP said alcohol and/or drugs were not a factor for the driver; however, it is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs are a factor for the pedestrian.
Anyone with information regarding this crash is asked to call the CHP Bakersfield Area Office at (661)396-6600.
