CHINATOWN, Manhattan (WABC) — Two women have been arrested after a car struck and killed a bicyclist and a pedestrian in Manhattan's Chinatown Saturday morning.
Police say two women inside the Chevy Malibu, ages 22 and 23, attempted to flee the scene but were apprehended and taken into custody.
One man, who identified himself as Christopher to Eyewitness News, says he tried to stop the women from fleeing the deadly collision.
"You're not going anywhere, you just killed two people. You're not going anywhere," he said.
At a news conference Sunday morning, Mayor Eric Adams cited speed as a factor in the fatal crash.
"From what it appears, the rate of speed was pretty high … We have to slow down and stop the reckless driving that we're experiencing," Adams said.
According to the NYPD, the Malibu was exiting the Manhattan Bridge around 7:30 a.m. when it jumped the curb and hit a cyclist and a pedestrian near Canal Street and Bowery, a busy intersection at any time of the day.
Investigators say the car then continued on its path of destruction by smashing into the back of a parked, unoccupied police van. When the crash finally came to a stop, Christopher claims the driver and her passenger grabbed their bags and tried to escape.
Police quickly arrived and arrested the two women.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The cyclist is a man in his 30s and the pedestrian is a woman in her 60s, according to police.
Eyewitness News was on scene as police taped off the nearby area and examined the vehicles involved and debris left from the crash.
Charges are pending against the women, who have since been taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation.
