Seventeen-year-old Gabriel Siqueira is remembered by his coach as a “great kid,” who was “full of energy, love and compassion.”
The West Yarmouth teen and varsity soccer player at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School was killed in a single-car crash in New Bedford early Saturday morning, Nov. 1, along with a 15-year-old girl, who has not yet been identified. Also unidentified is the 18-year-old driver, who was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a report from the Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III.
Jason Fajardo, D-Y assistant varsity soccer coach, described Siqueira in a phone call Monday as “always a hard worker.”
“I got really close with him,” Fajardo said. “It crushed me. I’m still in disbelief.”
He said Siqueira was planning on going back to Brazil and college after graduation.
Dennis-Yarmouth High School will provide counseling services to students and staff for the rest of this week.
“Gabriel Siqueira was not just a senior in our school but a cherished member of our community and an inspiring varsity soccer player,” Principal Kendra Bennett sent in a statement.
Marc Smith, Dennis-Yarmouth School District superintendent of schools, said Siqueira’s teammates, classmates and friends have been reaching out to the high school staff for care and support.
“The school staff have done a tremendous job,” he said.
Bennett offered condolences and support to the Siqueira family. Siqueira’s parents are Zaine and Marcio Siqueira, and brother, Samuel, according to Fajardo.
Massachusetts State Police responded to the crash on Route 140 South just before 2 a.m., according to a press release. First responders located the car, a 2019 Honda Civic, with significant damage to the passenger side of the vehicle in the wooded area off the roadway.
Siqueira was pronounced dead at the scene and the young woman was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead a short time later, the district attorney’s report stated. Both had been ejected from the car, the report said.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is being coordinated by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office along with the Massachusetts State Police. The District Attorney’s Office could not be reached for further updates Monday, Nov. 3.
